The latest to join the Australian hotbed of talent is the fresh-faced Sydney duo Sonderr. Their debut EP breaks the seal for Axe on Wax’s grittier sub-label Axe Traxx, packed with a perfect mix of ominous, entrancing chord progressions, heartfelt melodic structures and harsh broken beats.
Our pick of the bunch, ‘All My Dreams’ has a deep, soulful aura about it, from the distorted drum patterns to the distant, gripping vocals. The track unravels in a subtle but effective way; the first half keeps things slightly more toned down with a heavy four-to-the-floor beat, backed up by offbeat punchy percussion, only for us to then be warmed up by a bizarrely soothing, rough-around-the-edges sample of Al Green in ‘Could This Be Love’ – also used by James Blake and FaltyDL – providing a nostalgic tone and raw emotion.
By the end of Al’s second verse (if you can call it that), the song truly unmasks itself. Pitch bends on the speedy, chaotic beats, a beautifully timed bass – particularly impactful when you’re still riding on the vocal high notes – and unapologetically restless high hats.
